Discover jawai

Jawai is unlike any other safari destination in India. There’s no fence, no gate, and no forest department queue — just granite hills, open scrubland, and leopards that have lived alongside the local Rabari herders for generations. A safari in Jawai puts you in open-top jeeps threading between boulder formations older than the Himalayas, tracking leopards that den in the rock caves above the Jawai Bandh. Beyond the leopards, wildlife safaris in Jawai turn up striped hyenas, crocodiles basking at the dam’s edge, and over 200 recorded bird species.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Jawai good for spotting leopards?

Yes — Jawai has one of the highest leopard-sighting success rates of any safari destination in India. The leopards live in open, unfenced granite terrain rather than dense forest, so naturalists track them by behavior and known den sites rather than luck alone. Most Nature+ guests see a leopard within their first two safaris.

October to March offers the most comfortable safari conditions, with cool mornings and clear skies. April to June is actually the strongest window for sightings — the heat draws leopards toward waterholes and shaded rock crevices, making them easier to locate during early morning and late afternoon drives.

Jawai isn’t a fenced reserve — there are no gates, entry permits, or zone restrictions. Leopards move freely between the granite hills and the villages of the Rabari herding community, who have coexisted with them for generations. Safaris happen on open community land, guided entirely by tracker knowledge of den sites.

Jawai’s granite hills support one of the densest leopard populations in India relative to the area, with an estimated 40–60 individuals ranging across the region. Their comfort around human settlements — a rare trait — is what makes sightings so consistent compared to fenced reserves.

Beyond leopards, Jawai supports striped hyenas, crocodiles around the Jawai Bandh, jungle cats, and over 200 recorded bird species, including flamingos and migratory cranes in winter. Many safaris also pass through Rabari villages, adding a cultural dimension you won’t find in a forest reserve.

The nearest airport is Udaipur (~150 km), with Jodhpur (~180 km) as an alternative. Falna Railway Station, about 25 km away, is the most convenient rail option and connects well to Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur, and Ahmedabad. Jawai is also an easy road trip from Udaipur, Jodhpur, or Mount Abu.
